Integration
The ongoing process of making meaning from a psychedelic experience and incorporating insights into daily life.
Integration is the process of making meaning from a psychedelic experience and translating any insights or shifts in perspective into ongoing changes in daily life. It is considered structurally essential to therapeutic protocols and is treated as part of the intervention in modern clinical trials.
Integration typically unfolds over weeks to months following the acute experience. It can include journaling, structured conversation with a trained therapist or guide, somatic practice, behavioral change, and quiet reflection. The form matters less than the principle: experiences that are not integrated tend to fade without lasting effect.
The Hopkins, NYU, and Imperial College research groups all build integration sessions into their protocols. Several published trials report that the depth of integration correlates with the durability of clinical benefit.
